Spanish wine trends for the year 2020

Although during the previous twelve months great efforts have been made to achieve this goal, 2020 will be, without any doubt, the year in which Spanish wines manage to open their own place in international markets.

Today, very few wineries focus exclusively on the national environment. Even the most familiar and humble are making great efforts to be present in new countries, a truly positive event for the expansion of the essence and the outstanding characteristics of Spanish wine beyond our borders.

In this sense, the quality of Spanish wines is increasingly high and the participation of producers in various wine fairs in the world has been exponentially increased. In this way, the notoriety of all these products continues to gain integers in their competition for other markets, while increasing their notoriety and adding value to the whole of Spanish wine.

Climate change and wines in 2020

The transformation of nature and its respective phenomena is already a reality. At present, we are suffering a lot of situations of climatic instability, such as temperature variations in traditional vineyard areas.

In this year, Spanish wines must adapt to new varieties, treatments and elaboration processes in relation to a constantly changing climate.

Thus, following a relationship of cause and effect, there is an inevitable increase in the graduation of wines, while, on the contrary, culinary trends are geared towards lighter and simpler elaborations.

Therefore, by 2020 the wines of lower graduations will become the true kings of the market, thus benefiting the regions of colder crops and the vineyards that have been planted in the highlands. Current tastes turn towards more acidic and natural flavors, without added sugars, especially in white and sparkling.

The rise of the ecological and the local

Other of the great protagonists of this 2020 will be organic wines, that is, those that completely eliminate the application of chemical treatments against pests, such as fungicides or herbicides. For the first time, this type of wine occupies the top three positions in the most promising categories for more than 30% of international wine producers.

In the same way, the singularity and the specialization put in value the force of the local production, returning again to the mythical places of origin and to the most native customs. The local label sells very well and will continue to be one of the most favorable valuation criteria throughout 2020. The industry demands new generations of entrepreneurs willing to make a difference.

The growing ‘fashion’ of rose wines

There is no doubt that pale rosé wines are a trend in the world of wine. The explosion and the apparent mastery of the Provencal French style has made Spanish rosé wines evolve towards a much more elegant and sophisticated profile. And everything seems to indicate that this will be the tendency to continue in the coming years.

The current rosés are so subtle that they can appear white because of their appearance, while being able to capture the attention of the new amateur tasters for their striking and solid structure in the mouth.

In short, as in the case of the aforementioned organic, this category of wines is increasingly better maintained and valued, not only in France, but throughout the world.

It is clear that in 2020 they will give a lot to talk about and will not leave anyone indifferent.
