The best Glass for each Type of Wine

If in the previous blog post I talked about the importance of wine tannins, in this second publication I will focus on another topic that will also be very interesting. I am convinced that you have asked the following question on more than one occasion: what is the best glass for each type of wine? Well, take note, because I have the answer!

First of all, you have to keep in mind that although there are different drinks in the market, they all have some common characteristics. For example, they always have to be manufactured only in glass, since it is a material that does not add flavors or odors to the wine itself.

In addition, all glasses should have a transparent appearance and have three distinct parts: the upper part (body or chalice, where the wine is placed), the central part (stem or shaft, generally, elongated or narrow, by where the cup is held) and the bottom (base or foot, flat and circular).

Types of glasses for red wine

They are usually the largest and in my opinion, are perfect to provide the maximum contact of the wine with air, facilitating oxygenation.

One of the most common models for red wine is the Burgundy cup which has a larger diameter in its body and a narrower opening. Therefore, thanks to its design it is very easy to turn the wine inside.

Next to it, another very interesting glass is the Bordeaux type, which we usually use in our homes, since it can be bought in most large stores. It is a little higher than the previous one and has a more stylized shape, with a smaller body or bowl.

Usually, this type of glasses are the best to distribute the wine through the center and the back of the mouth, getting the bitter touch of the tannins.

In general terms, the glass of Bordeaux is perfect for wines with more body, like Cabernet Sauvignon, while the Burgundy glass is more recommended for others something lighter, like the traditional and famous Pinot Noir. With this last one, you will be able to appreciate the most delicate flavors of the wine through the tip of the tongue.

What is the most suitable glass for white wine?

In this section, I recommend you opt for a glass very similar to Bordeaux, although, in this case, to serve the white you need a smaller size and a larger opening in the cup, because what we want is to appreciate well its sweet taste in the mouth.

In this sense, this type of glasses are very suitable to recognize, for example, the toasted and vanilla notes of some white wines, such as Chardonnay. Its straight form, more than that of a red one, allows to keep the wine at a cool temperature, without losing its qualities.

In addition, if you have any unforeseen and you do not have the ideal glassware, you can also use these glasses to serve rosé wines, and even young reds with fruity nuances, such as the redPetit Suneus from AV Bodeguers, since they do not require a very great to be able to fully appreciate all its aromas.

The best glasses for sparkling wines

They are usually the favorites, on their own merits, of the bubble fans. They have a very curious shape and are the typical glasses in which, usually, cava and champagne are served, although they can also be used for most sparkling wines, like the  cava rosé AMOR from Berdié.

With its use, you will get your nose to capture all the aromas that come from the wine itself and also, you can taste it at the perfect temperature point with the fully integrated carbonic. To do this, the cups should be made of thin glass, transparent and uncut.

I am convinced that you will recognize them quickly because of their long stem and stylized body, designed so that you can perceive the formation and evolution of the characteristic bubbles of this type of wine.

For this reason, pay attention to the vintage glasses, the tulip glasses (the one on the right of the photo), with a curious flower shape, and the flute glasses, which stand out from the rest by their closed mouth, which prevents the loss of gas of the sparkling wine.

Types of glasses for sweet wine

The glasses for sweet wine have a much smaller size than the previous ones, as well as a wide body and a narrow opening. With them, it is intended to appreciate the concentration of aromas directly in the nose, while inviting to serve in the mouth a small amount of wine in each sip.

Sure you can hear the following glasses for sweet wine: Porto (perfect for Sherry wines), Madeira (with a characteristic conical shaped calyx), Sauternes (originally designed for dry white wine) and Dulce Standard (with a special edge) and very used at the time of the aperitif in Spain).

And so far this little explanation, in the form of a post, of the best glasses for each type of wine! As always, if you have any questions or want to contact me, I will be happy to answer your questions on the other side of the screen or if you prefer, using the contact form.
